In a region embroiled in ethnic and religious conflict how do you survive in your daily lives? How do you escape the shackles of poverty and despair? Who do you turn to when the authorities are not on your side? And if you are a da’ie amidst all that helplessness, how do you spread the word of God?
Come and listen to Sheikh Almahdi Baginda, the da’ie and imam of Maahad and Masjid Abu Bakar As Siddiq (don’t imagine this like the one in Bangsar!) in Zamboanga City on the Island of Mindanao, southern Philippines. The, iman who speaks, fluent Arabic and English, built and manage the masjid all himself and is also the bilal, khatib and siak.
A few members of Al-Nidaa’ who recently visited the place have this to say of the place:
“The Ma'had is situated 4km from the the town, has large land but buildings (donated by the Kuwaiti Government some 20 years ago) are in run-down state, with big cracks on the walls, unplastered ceiling, very old and cracking chairs & tables. However, the overall environment (classes and offices) is rather clean and well-kept, except the clogged drain, which badly needs repair. There are nearly 600 students from kindergarten age through adults. Sheikh Mahdi's 5th son, Islambuli, who studied in Khartoum and Sana'a Yaman, started Tahfiz classses 10 months ago and the students are now able to hafaz 20 juzu'. The students there only speaks Arabic. They are able to speak Arabic within 3 months!"
Let’s hear what the Imam has to say and, maybe, Allah may even open our hearts to donate in his cause.
