Captain James “Yusuf” Yee, a West Point graduate also trained in the traditional Islamic sciences in Syria, had served as a Muslim Chaplain for the US Army in Guantanamo Bay prison camp. In 2003 he was arrested on false political and criminal charges and sent to a navy prison where he was subjected to torture and degradation. His experience is narrated in his award-winning book, For God and Country: Faith and Patriotism under Fire, described by Washington Post as “required reading for all US officials waging war on Islamist terrorists.”
